The Inventors of the Barcode

January 30th, 2010

The barcode may be everywhere today, but it is a relatively recent invention. Bernard Silver and Norman Woodland started working on the idea in the late 1940s. Silver was likely unaware that another inventor had developed a system using punch cards back in the 1930s.

Silver had a fairly clear idea of what needed to be done and he was obsessed enough to use his own money to find a system that worked. Initial attempts used ultraviolet ink but the ink faded too quickly and the process was too expensive. He later claimed that Morse code gave him the inspiration that led to his first successful barcode design. He took the Morse code dots and dashes and put them in rows.

Of course having a system to read these codes was another matter. For this Silver adapted technology used for reading the sound scores on movie film. Silver and Woodland received their first patent for the new technology in 1952. Silver started working for IBM in 1951, who was, ironically, deeply involved in punch-card technology. Silver tried to interest the corporate giant in his project, and IBM actually commissioned a report which indicated the idea was feasible, but involved technology that was simply unavailable at the time.

Early barcode scanner prototypes indicated that the technology could work. The prototype reader system was also too large to be practical and they had no easy way to make it smaller. While IBM offered to purchase the patent for far less than it was worth, Silver and Woodland persevered. In 1962, Philco bought the patents. Before the project with Philco could go very far Bernard Silver was killed in a car crash.

Meanwhile it was becoming clear that barcode scanning technology could be used by grocery stores who were trying to maintain the right amount of inventory, and railroads struggling to keep track of their many cars. The railroad industry, still very strong in those days, adopted a system similar to the barcode

This alternative system was developed by David Collins and promoted by Sylvania. Collins tried to interest Sylvania in a smaller version of the system which could be used on anything, but Sylvania turned him down. As a result Collins left his arrangement with Sylvania and created his own company called Computer Identics Corporation. Meanwhile Philco sold the barcode patent rights to RCA.

Development began in earnest in the late 1960s, as the grocery industry now demanded such technology. Manufacturing companies also needed this type of technology.

Collins’ Computer Identics quietly installed rudimentary, hand-built barcode and scanning systems in a General Motors (GM) plant in Michigan, and the General Trading Company in New Jersey. Meanwhile at RCA they were working on a laser-guided barcode system which was first installed at Kroger for testing. By the 1970s IBM became involved in barcode technology development again and put Norman Woodland in charge of their project. Barcode technology’s future had finally arrived.

Did You Know Grapefruit Juice and Some Medications Can Cause Negative Effects?

January 29th, 2010

Do you like grapefruit? The interaction between grapefruit juice and some medications can cause negative effects, especially on the kidney, and sometimes it can be fatal. A woman that uses birth control pills and then suddenly drinks too much grapefruit juice can get pregnant because this juice makes the effects of the pills disappear.

Grapefruit juice is not suggested to drink while taking antidepressant medication, antibiotics and medicine for cardio-vascular diseases. A person that takes anti-depressives and adds to that grapefruit in huge quantities can feel that he has all of a sudden too much or too little energy, depending on the pills taken. Combining it with an antibiotic can cause stomach sickness or can extend the illness you are taking medication for because the antibiotics will diminish their effect. Heart drugs don’t work anymore, the blood pressure stays up and the heart beats irregularly. For those that love grapefruit juice, witch is more concentrated than the fruit itself, a recommendation would be to restrain from drinking it while they are taking medication.

Doctors try to raise attention upon avoiding and combating the combination of grapefruit with medicine especially because in some diets grapefruit juice is recommended in huge quantities.

Grapefruit is beneficial to the body if used properly. It belongs to that class of that burn calories, because it takes more calories to digest them than they have. Eating the fruit is not a problem, nor is drinking a glass of juice once in a while. The problem appears where human reasoning disappears. Wanting to loose more weight faster, people weaken their bodies and eat only grapefruits. It is efficient for a diet, but it also weakens the immune system. You may become more vulnerable, more tired and nervous and if taking any medications you are risking your health in this combination.

So eat grapefruits in moderation, and go ask a specialist of its precise effects when taking medication in your case and don’t abuse drinking grapefruit juice. Abusing something has never brought anything good, and it won’t in this case either. If you want to go on with your diet and keep your health find an alternative solution or make sure this does not affect your body.

Fishing Tackle

January 29th, 2010

The almost all standard piece of gear required for fishing may be fishing tackle. Fishing tackle is really a generic phrase that refers to gear such as lures, bait, lines, rods, reels, nets plus trawls, downriggers, outriggers, gaffs, harpoons, clevises, floats, and traps.

The kind of fishing tackle that you may need depends on the kind of fish that you are angling toward catch. It can also be dictated by your experience in fishing. A fishing tackle might be as straightforward as a soda can with fishing line fastened to it, or a pole using a line tied to the end. These plain forms of fishing tackle are used to fish next to the bank.

Superior users should consider a rod and reel arrangement. This kind of fishing tackle makes use of reels to keep plenty of line. This enables you to cast your line further. A rod and reel arrangement is crucial for fishing in deeper waters as well as for tackling greater fish. You can find many several kinds of fishing tackle which employ the rod and reel arrangement. The four basic kinds are: spin cast, spinning, bait cast, and fly casting. For more info, visit our website my used fishing tackle

Spin cast

Spin cast fishing tackle is ideal for newbies as it can be simple to make use of, following a bit of training. to catch fish such as bluegill, crappie, and different pan fish.

Spinning

Spinning fish tackle is so named as the casting reels spool spins as the line is cast out. The style is like spin casting fishing tackle except that the reel can be mounted on the underside of the handle and also the line is released by applying the index finger. This type of style requires a little of practice, as well as is only endorsed for more advanced users. The benefit of a spinning tackle is that it allows you to cast your line over a large distance and lets you use a variety of fishing lines.

Bait casting

Bait casting is among the most challenging types of fishing tackle to use. As the line is controlled by your thumb, you have to put in a lot of hours of practice to make certain that you can manage the line properly. The plus of bait casting is that it provides an unbelievable amount of accuracy and control. In truth bait casting is the ideal method of fishing tackle for pro bass fishing.

Fly casting

Fly casting is regarded as the pinnacle of fishing tackle. This may be the most tough of all fishing tackles and requires loads of practice and patience to master. The fundamental movement is similar to spin casting; however in fly casting, instead of depending on a weighted lure, the weight of the line itself carries the synthetic fly to the fish. Fly casting allows you to cast your line with speed, accuracy, and gives maximum range. Fly fishing may be a hugely competitive sport and attracts thousands of enthusiasts yearly.

The wooden staircase wasnt the only thing that was rotten.

January 29th, 2010

Having recently purchased a property for restoration in Dorset, I soon found that the amount of work was more than I had at first considered, with a certain amount of rot and wood worm getting into the oak beams and wooden staircase. My first job was to look into skip hire Dorset so that I could dispose of timber and rubble away from the build site, rot and woodworm isn’t something you want to be introducing to new oak beams, larch cladding etc that you get from the Timber supplier. Once I had acro propped the site of the rotten oak beam, I bought in an oak beam from a local hardwood supplier and gradually raised the beam into place using blocks to get it where I needed it (the raising system looked like something that would have been at home in an Egyptian archaeology dig, but is great if it is only you available for the lifting). Once the beam was in place and set upon a couple of cap stones I plastered the ends into place.

The stairs on the other hand was more of a crowbar job, I made sure I took as many measurements as possible measuring the rise of each step and the depth from front to back. Once I had stripped out the framework I measured the footprint of the stairs and height from the ground up to the level of the upstairs floor. This gave me a basic framework from which to work to when working out the layout of the new wooden staircase. I opted to go with an oak staircase as it tied in with the numerous beams around the house and timber supply wasn’t that difficult as there are numerous suppliers online that are really helpful. I spoke to an actual staircase manufacturer to make up some of the spindles I wanted for the stairs and then a local blacksmith made me up some contemporary metal pieces to mix between each spindle the end result was pretty impressive even if I do say so myself.

On the first floor the master bedroom had a large section of its oak flooring riddled with rot due to a large patch of the tiled roof having lost its tiles and allowed the rain to leak through to the floor below. I spoke to reclamation yards and timber yards before coming across a hardwood flooring supplier that seemed to be able to match the grain and colouring of the oak floor. A top tip that I would offer anyone that is stripping out a lot of timber from a home is to burn the wood onsite. It saves on the cost of skip hire and makes sure that you aren’t part of the spread of woodworm. Fortunately for me most of the joists on the first floor were intact so once I had sorted out the issues with the floor. If you do take on a restoration project make sure that you take your time when assessing the amount of work needed to replace the damaged components, let me put it this way oak really isn’t cheap. Not to sound all doom and gloom, restoration is an extremely satisfying way of getting a home that you want without paying out the bloated house prices that the market sees at present, just make sure you do your homework before you start.

January 28th, 2010

Taking out a subscription of periodicals is a simple means to have your preferential periodical continuously. In the Internet age it is possible to order papers and journals at online vendors on the Internet. That will help the purchaser to obtain their magazine quickly after it has been put out.

What are the vantages of taking out a subscription of your favored periodical instead of buying it separately every time it is released, and what are some special rules for subscribing to German magazines?

It is crucial to respect the rule that the benefits coming with a new subscription regularly cannot be claimed by the new readers themselves but by the person who recommended the fresh purchaser. So it is beneficial to order the new magazine subscription together with someone else like your grandpa. One plays the role of the new customer and the other one gets the bonus.

For everybody who is interested in German newspapers and journals, the following Internet site commends some important online firms providing journals subscriptions: Best Life Abonnement bestellen.

Your home for sale online

January 27th, 2010

Having recently thinking about selling my house and as with a lot of subjects like this have been trying to find out what the best way to make the house really attractive before we either sell our house or remain in it for a bit longer. I started by looking at various rooms in the house and considering what I could do to improve them and remove any issues I might feel about them.

Central to my house is the kitchen so I started their considering the kitchen layout, our kitchen is a fitted kitchen which works quite well with a reasonable work space (fortunately I talked to a near by kitchen business about kitchen planning ahead of buying). The floor had problems with just lino down which had got a little ripped up as I had moved washing machines and fridges about in it. I got some tiling advice from a local business to get the floor tiles that would blend in with the kitchen units without making the room appear to dark (just some of the small things you have to consider when you come to sell your house, initial impressions need to be just right within the small time somebody has to view your house).

The next room I wanted to ensure was working was the bathroom, my bathroom layout was a bit small due to some fitted cupboards which when removed gave me lots more room (which if you are going on initial impressions could help sell my house). Once again I popped down to the local tiler for some good tiling advice and went for big light tiles which seemed to open the space in the room, just one of the many things to be thinking about when purchasing bathroom tiles.

I then went through the house and decorated with a neutral light colour which drew the rooms out and provided the whole house with a new look. I then stripped out as much stuff as I could and boxed everything that wasn’t necessary away in the garage. The final thing, a house that I wanted to remain in, but after just one or two viewings brought to me from an online property site I have got some good interest, so heres hoping ill be able to sell my house soon.

I hope you enjoyed this article, you can read my latest article on gas air compressor at www.gasaircompressorsite.com Please let me know what you think of it.

Cookie Diet - A Fad?

January 27th, 2010

In the world of fad diets almost nothing can be more absurd than the cookie diet. The diet relies on eating cookies to control hunger and thus help people lose weight.

Fad diets are intended to help people lose a great deal of weight in a short period of time – they’re popular because they appear to be miracles. Most fad diets center on some super weight loss food, much like the cookie diet centers on the cookie. These diets rely on slick pitches that make it seem silly not to buy and try the diet. Check out this Crack the Fat Loss Code review, where you will learn about a diet program that claims outrageous results, but sticks to its word!

The cookie diet was created by a physician named Sanford Siegel in 1975 while he was researching a book on the effect of natural foods on hunger. To maintain the cookie diet people would eat six cookies a day, plus a regular dinner. All told the daily caloric intake was about 800 calories. People went wild over the cookie diet to the extent that 14 clinics opened in Florida. It wasn’t long before over 200 doctors were regularly recommending the cookie diet. The diet was quickly expanded to miracle soups and shakes that also contained the amino acids. If you are willing to lower your calorie intake to such an extreme, why not just go on an intermittent fast for 24 hours? Read this Eat Stop Eat review for more details.

A new version of the cookie diet became popular with Hollywood stars as the Hollywood cookie diet. Stars and starlets made their use of the diet well known, which helped vault it to public attention. This diet is similar to the original in that it consists of a cookie for breakfast, a cookie as a snack in the morning, a cookie for lunch, a cookie as a mid-afternoon snack, and then a reasonable dinner. Each cookie contains approximately 150 calories, loaded with fiber, protein and 13 vitamins and minerals.

Don’t waste time with the cookie diet. Remember that good health comes from a balanced diet and an exercise program. Even if the star of your favorite movie claims to love them, avoid so called miracle weight loss foods.

All about Replacing Your Kitchen Floor Tiles

January 26th, 2010

Are you running out of kitchen tile ideas? Do you want to enhance the look of your kitchen without spending too much?  Although it is true that remodeling your kitchen is a very expensive undertaking, there are ways for you to keep the costs down. You can keep down the expenses if you know how to maximize the aesthetic value of modern tiles.  In fact, ditching  your old tiles is probably the most affordable option when making significant upgrades of your kitchen.

Getting the Most Suitable Tile for Your Kitchen

If you want to keep the costs down, it is very important to know the different types of tiles available. The most affordable and easiest to install is the linoleum tile. The only thing that you need to do is lay the linoleum tile over a smooth surface. You can do this installation yourself so you can have a brand-new looking kitchen floor in no time at all.  Another affordable option available for you is buying ceramic tiles. Ceramic tile is very versatile, durable and suitable for any room in the house.  You can easily find kitchen floor tiles in almost all hardware stores and online shops. Because these tiles are highly versatile, you can safely use ceramic bathroom floor tiles in the kitchen.

If you are not on  a tight budget, then high-end varieties of contemporary tiles would be perfect for your project.  If you want to have a cozy and modern kitchen, you might want to consider using hardwood or laminated bamboo tiles. These tiles are coated in such a way that they can resist spills and oil splashes. For a more elegant look, you should consider glass tiles. These look very sleek, durable, and can be used as elegant borders for your countertop and backsplash wall. Another high-end option are stone tiles. There are a wide array of stone tile varieties including slate, granite, marble and travertine.  Not only are they extremely high quality but they are also relatively cheaper than glass.

Some Important Reminders

When buying kitchen floor tiles, you should always keep in mind the safety factor. Make sure that the tiles have an anti-slip coating. The grains of the surface should not be too smooth to avoid slips and falls. It is also vital to buy kitchen or bathroom floor tiles which have a glazed surface.  This will ensure that the tiles can resist stains – making them easier to clean and maintain. Simply wipe off the stains with sponge and tile cleaner and you are good to go.  All in all, remodeling your kitchen is all about of choosing which types of tiles to go with that will coordinate with the existing décor that your dining area has.

Gemstones 123 - Their Use In Heart Jewelry

January 26th, 2010

Beautiful jewelry can come in various forms, shapes, and types. Beautiful heart jewelry is no exception to this rule. It is very popular these days to incorporate various gemstones into jewelry. Do you know of all the various types of gemstones that are often used? In this short article we will be concentrating on the various gemstones that are often used in the creation of pretty jewelry.

Amber is an ancient gemstone that is made up of compressed tree resin.

Amethyst is the most valued gemstone in the quartz family, and this has been the case for many years. It is prized for its “purple hue”, which can range from light to dark.

What gemstone is known for its beautiful green to bluish green color? The answer is emeralds. An ancient gemstone, some historians believe that it was mined by the Ancient Egyptians way back to 3500 B.C.

Jade can come in a range of colors, but the most popular color is green. This gemstone has been closely linked to Asian history, culture and tradition. It has a nickname, which is the “stone of heaven”.

Jasper comes in a myriad of colors. It is a gemstone of the chalcedony family, and often has very interesting and beautiful patterns. Picture jasper, a popular form of jasper, is known for it’s beige’s and browns and elaborate swirls.

Rubies are known for their intense red color, and are amongst the most highly valued precious gemstones. The word for ruby in the Sanskrit language is “ratnaraj” (which means “king of precious stones”).

Sapphires are amongst the most popular of gemstones in the United States. The “blue sapphire” tops the list. Known for its medium to deep blue color, and its strong saturation, it is much more affordable than ruby, emerald, or “regular sapphires”.

Turquoise is found in only a few places on earth. Here’s a question for you. Which area of the world is the world’s largest producer of turquoise? The answer is the southwest United States. This gemstone is prized for its attractive medium blue to greenish blue color.

Some gemstones are classified as organic, while others are classified as inorganic. Do you know which is which? Organic gemstones are those that are produced by living organisms (i.e.: pearls, amber, and coral). Inorganic gemstones are composed of minerals (i.e.: diamonds, rubies, and emeralds).

We hope that you enjoyed this brief look into the world of gemstones that are most often utilized in the creation of jewelry.  Heart jewelry and Open Heart Jewelry use these gemstones very heavily.  They can also be found in Horse Jewelry.  Beautiful and colorful, these gemstones can add significant value to a piece of jewelry.

Responsible Demolition

January 25th, 2010

Introduction

Taking down old buildings and replacing them with new is a process that has been going on for thousands of years. The destruction of buildings was normal during battles and skirmishes of towns; and also due to natural disturbances such as earthquakes or volcanic activity. The resultant ruins would need to be removed and rebuilt.

So the idea of demolition would have come about where a population wished to re-inhabit a specific area or site. (One famous example is the Holy Temple in Jerusalem which was deliberately destroyed by the Assyrians around 586 BCE. After 50 years of Assyrian occupation the Jews returned to Jerusalem and began the re-construction of the second temple which took seventy years to complete.)

However the actual word to demolish only came into being in 1570, and has been used since then, in the way we understand it today, to mean the deliberate taking down or destroying of a building or structure.

Preserving the Past - Preparing the Future

In a country like Britain with a very dense population per square mile, there is a limited amount of available land that can be used for construction . In Britain there is a policy of protected land between built up areas of the villages and towns known as Green Belt. This means the land is from urban development to preserve the agricultural and natural heritage which is vital to the economy and structure of the country.

The outcome of this policy is that there is a constant shortage of land for housing and industry, so the developers have to be more creative when providing accommodation for the population. One of the ways of doing this is to find places where the buildings are no longer commercially viable or have been abandoned, and then re-use the area for a new purpose.

These areas are known as Brownfield, or Greyfield sites. In some cities, particularly Leeds and Manchester, instead of demolishing the old warehouses or factories, they have been converted into apartments, retaining the original shell and reconfiguring the internal dimensions into desirable living accommodation.

Brownfield sites are disused industrial and commercial facilities where the land may have been contaminated with hazardous waste or pollution. They are potentially valuable for significant redevelopment once they have been cleaned up. Greyfield sites are urban properties that have been underutilised or abandoned, but do not have the environmental issues of brownfield sites. They were termed greyfield sites because of large areas of asphalt that covered the land such as old car parks. These sites are valuable because they already have the infrastructure such as water, sewage, electricity and gas in place and do not need a great deal of remedial work to utilise the site.

When a structure is to be demolished there are many different aspects to consider and various ways of approaching the task. The size and construction of the building, the new proposed use of the site and whether or not there are valuable elements suitable for re-use, will all determine how it is to be dismantled.

Traditional Demolition

Traditionally, once all the services were disconnected, the machinery and men would go in and just knock down the walls which caused the roof to collapse inwards and then all they needed to do was to drag all the debris away. Any concrete hard standing would be broken up ready for removal. The usual excavation would involve the clearing of rubbish to landfill sites.

Small structures such as two or three storey houses can be dismantled quite easily with hydraulic excavators and bulldozers using an undermining process. The walls are undermined at the base, in order to topple the structure; at the same time the manner and direction of the fall is controlled. Safety issues and clean-up procedures need to be considered when choosing how the building will be undermined and demolished.

Larger buildings such as tower blocks and chimneys require more specialist techniques, and these are discussed in more detail below.

Deconstruction

A new more recent approach to demolishing buildings is deconstruction - which is a green approach. The aim is to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill sites by carefully preserving valuable materials to be reused. Although the work may be a painstaking task of dismantling by hand - brick by brick - or beam by beam, the reclaimed materials can then be recycled or re-used for future buildings. The results of deconstruction can save in excess of 90% waste from going to landfill sites. When the farmer opposite to my house sold his farm yard with barns for housing, the builder demolished the barns, cleaned up the bricks and reused them for the perimeter wall of the farmhouse. At the time I was looking for some rubble as a base for a path and the builder let me take several barrow loads off his pile.

Recycling

Historically when old buildings were ruined from disuse or war damage the local people would gradually remove the stone and use it to build their new structures such as houses or barns. The stone used to construct Hadrian’s wall between Carlisle and Newcastle has mostly gone because the local population made off with the beautifully dressed stone after the Romans left, to use in their own buildings. So even in those days people understood the value of recycling because it was much cheaper than having to quarry and dress the stone themselves.

At one time the rubble resulting from a demolished building would be taken to a landfill site for disposal. Now however concrete is easily broken up with the latest machine called a guillotine and the resultant rubble can be crushed and used as sub-base material for the foundation of new buildings that replace the old, or sent to other construction sites. These days this crushed rubble is called 6f2 crushed stone or 6f2 crushed material.

Modern machinery and techniques allows the demolition companies to efficiently segregate waste types on or off-site. Wherever possible construction materials are recycled and re-used in the new structures. Recycling of waste contributes to a significant savings in project costs as well as being good for the environment.

When we renovated our bungalow 20 years ago the builder, who was a bell ringer, found an old beam from a bell tower that was being renovated, and after carefully treating it, installed it in the kitchen. It made a feature of the room giving it some badly needed character and has never needed any further treatment.

Copper pipes, wiring, roof tiles or slates, floor tiles and doors, and wood panelling are some of the valuable items that are saved for recycling and re-use. There are specialist yards in many towns where reclaimed old or antique artefacts are available for purchase.

Tall Buildings

When building demolition work involve really high buildings then very skilled demolition contractors need to be used.

In some cases a wrecking ball on a crane may be used to demolish the top part of a tall building until it is down to a manageable height. However these days this process is rarely used by professional demolition companies because of the uncontrollable factor of the swinging ball and the proximity of other buildings.

Other methods of demolition of tall buildings are by implosion using explosives, controlled collapse and piecemeal. Also ‘High Reach’ demolition excavators are used where explosives are notsuitable. Once the building is down to a more manageable height demolition continues in the usual way.

The steeplejack Fred Dibnah became famous in the late 1970’s for his work on demolishing tall chimneys without the need for explosives. He would cut an ingress at the base of the chimney, use wooden props to support the brickwork and then burn the props so that the chimney toppled hopefully in the right direction. One time he was nearly killed because it didn’t topple in quite the right direction.

The tallest building to be lawfully demolished was the Singer Building of New York in 1967/8. More recently the collapse of the World Trade Centre after the 9/11 attack in 2001 illustrates the terrible devastation that occurs if the demolition is not controlled and very carefully contained.

Explosions

What usually comes to mind for many people when they think about demolition would be the dramatic collapse of a tall building using explosives. However it is usually the process of implosion, using explosives, that brings down a tall building so that it does as little damage as possible to the surrounding environment. Implosion is essential for dense urban areas and is very fast, the collapse taking only seconds, with the building falling inwards into its own footprint.

Using explosives is very specialist work and is a highly skilled process and getting it wrong can bedevastating. If an implosion is not prepared correctly the danger may be damage to neighbouring structures or even killing onlookers from flying debris. Even more dangerous is a partial collapse of a building where the remaining structure is unstable and there are still primed explosives that failed to go off. Workers are in great danger if or when they continue the demolition.

Other potential risks of working with explosives occurs when the atmospheric pressure from low cloud above the implosion site may cause the shockwave to spread outwards instead of upwards. The wave of energy and sound created will break windows and cause other damage to the surrounding buildings. Because of the dangers of working with explosives, implosion will only be used when other methods are too costly or impractical.

Health and Safety

Demolition of any building is highly dangerous and is a much more complicated and technical process than most people would realise. Experienced and skilled operators are essential to ensure safety for both workers and public alike. The stability of any structure is reliant on the interdependence of its component parts, so an incorrect sequence of dismantling could result in an unplanned collapse.

Survey of Demolition

Identification of any structural problems as well as risks associated with hazardous or flammable substances such as asbestos removal requiring strict asbestos surveys on site.

Where petrol has been stored, in a disused garage for example, precautions need to be taken to prevent a fire hazard.

Health and safety is paramount in demolition work so personnel working in the industry have to be thoroughly trained. It is advisable for operatives to have gained a Certificate of Competence in Demolition to ensure they have the necessary skills and safety awareness. All demolition work is regulated by the Construction, Design and Management Regulatory Body.

Sequence of Demolition

There are regulations in place as to the sequence of actions before any demolition can be performed. Each area council will have their own specific list for planning approval, and they vary from area to area, but a typical order would be as follows:-

Provision of Information

The demolition company must provide information about the construction to be demolished, its previous use and the appropriate demolition method to be applied including disposal of any hazardous substances

Preferred and Safe Method of Work

Any reputable company involved in demolition will know and understand the most suitable methods of disposal. Planning and outlining the dismantling process is necessary for meticulous monitoring. A detailed statement outlining the safety process has to be agreed by all parties involved before any demolition can take place.

Preparation and Planning

There is a great deal of preparation to be done before any work can start on the demolishing of the building itself. Issues such as asbestos abatement, disconnecting utilities, rodent baiting, dealing with hazardous substances and making safe any electric, gas or other services have to be resolved.

Protection of the Public

Where demolition is carried out in heavily populated areas the protection of the public is without question paramount. Safety cannot be compromised. Temporary services may need to be arranged, health hazards assessed and people inconvenienced will need to be informed.

Conclusion

The word ‘demolish’ is interpreted as the deliberate and controlled collapse of a structure. This is usually done to make way for future structures or to make an existing structure safe. Demolition work is a very riskybusiness and demolishing any building is a complex and skilled process. The aim in demolition is to remove an unwanted building as safely and quickly as possible, recycle or re-use most of the old material, and clear the site ready for the subsequent use.

In the centre of Nottingham over the last few years there has been a major reconstruction of what was an old car park into a brand new shopping complex centre. While this was going on the public were only really aware of the boarding around the area, a change in traffic direction and maybe some big lorries going in and out of the site.

So the next time you see structures being demolished to make way for the new, give a thought to the company involved who’s team are daily working in a very dangerous environment, adhering to all of the regulations and carefully and meticulously carrying out the project to bring us the modern conveniences we have come to expect and clearing the way for the future.

Did you ever try to find a lost friend on the Internet?

January 24th, 2010

Have you ever tried to find a lost friend on the Internet? I have it is not as easy as you might think. I had a good friend in junior high and I have fond memories of hanging out having fun with him. We would hang out listen to music talk just have a great time.

The other day I was thinking about my long-lost friend and I decided to try to find them on the Internet. It seems everyone nowadays uses the Internet so I figured it shouldn’t be difficult to locate him. I pulled up Google typed his name and get pages on pages of results. I checked out page after page but didn’t find any mention of my friend just a lot of people with similar names.

I decided try to narrow my search a bit by including the town and state where we grew up. Unfortunately they were still too many pages to look through for it to be practical to find my lost friend. I decided Google just gave to many results so I would try using a less popular search engine like MSN.

I typed in my friends name and the city and state where we grew up and sure enough I did get a lot fewer results. Instead of hundreds of pages there are only eight. I started looking through those pages of results and I found a couple which I thought would surely lead me to find my lost friend. However, after an hour of searching I still came up empty.

Then I decided to try Yahoo. Since Yahoo search has been around longer than Google or MSN I thought I might have better luck there. Again I entered my friends name the city and state and this time I got about 30 pages of results. I started the arduous task of looking through each and every page and clicking on link after link. Now I was getting frustrated I spent all this time and still cannot find my lost friend.

I pretty much gave up on finding my friend until a couple months later when I discovered reunion.com. I decided to give the site a try and I was amazed at how quickly I was able to turn up results for my lost friend. The service was not free but considering the amount of time I have wasted trying to search in the regular search engines it was definitely worth the small price.

I was able to find a phone number for my friend and I gave them a call. He was very happy to hear from me. In fact, he had been searching for me also. We have a long phone conversation and it turns out that he lived close enough that we could meet for lunch. Although it was more difficult to locate my lost friend than I had imagined it was great to find him and I’m glad I put in the effort.

Website E Commerce Web Design Article

January 23rd, 2010

Normally, if you want to have professional web designers custom build your site, you must be prepared to dish out at least a couple thousand Rands. First, you must understand that it is a rip off to get the big companies to design websites for you.

Therefore, it would be wise to find freelance web designers who work from home. However, choose your web designer with care. Another route you can take is to design your website yourself.

The system takes you through all the processes of not just building a website, but building a SUCCESSFUL website.. there is a huge difference trust me.

Convincing your prospects to purchase from you is a hard job, but have you ever thought that you’re making the process twice as difficult for both parties if your prospects are convinced but don’t know how to buy from you? No matter how good you are at convincing your prospects, they won’t buy if they find the process cumbersome. First, you will want to check that people can find your order form easily and hassle-free.

Also, do you offer multiple payment options? Some people may feel comfortable paying via Paypal, some may only want to pay with their credit card and others might want to send a cheque. How about after sales support? Who do they contact when they have problems after purchasing?

Make them feel safe about buying something from you, a total stranger to them on the other end of the Internet.

As a conclusion, it would be very pitiful if you sold hard and sold well to a prospect and something goes wrong when he or she is ready to pay. However, Flash based sites have been disputed to be bloated and unnecessary.

This whole new level of interactivity will always leave visitors coming back for more. No more woes over how a certain css code displays differently in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera. Flash is a lightweight option for animation because it is vector based (and hence smaller file sizes) as opposed to real ‘movie files’ that are raster based and hence much larger in size.

If you want to know more about web designer then you should have a look at web designer as well as website designer

You’ll also have to put in additional work in redirecting the user to the Flash download page if he or she doesn’t have the player installed. Hence, you will not be able to rank well in search engines and there will be less traffic heading to your site.

Users have to wait longer than usual to load Flash content compared to regular text and images, and some visitors might just lose their patience and click the Back button. The best way to go is to use Flash only when you absolutely need the interactivity and motion that comes with it.

Flash animation is not much different from normal animation as every bit of the animation has to be done by hand. Hence, it is important to practise good design principles to make sure your site reaches out to the maximum number of visitors and sells to as many people as possible.

The navigation menu should be uncluttered and concise so that visitors know how to navigate around your website without confusion. If you think any image is essential on your site, make sure you optimize them using image editing programs so that they have a minimum file size.

If a paragraph is too long, you should split it into seperate paragraphs so that the text blocks will not be too big. If your website looks great in Internet Explorer but breaks horribly in Firefox and Opera, you will lose out on a lot of prospective visitors. Also, scripts are not supported across all browsers, so some visitors might miss important information because of that.

January 23rd, 2010

Home theaters are getting to be extremely popular among American homes. This modern technology is slowly  giving movie theaters a run for their money. Basic knowledge of home theater system and its basic components may be best for people who want to bring home relaxation and entertainment.

The most important consideration in the design and complete set up of your home theater is the size of  the room. The home theater speakers and the other components of your home theater may need to consider  the size of the room. Too small rooms for your home theater may not require so many speakers. Only three speakers may be good if the room is quite small.

Do not overload your small room; you may not be able to  get the entertainment and relation you want if you feel overloaded with so many home theater speakers.  Because you only need three home theater speakers in your small room, you may need to acquire the  high-end brand of home theater speakers to compliment the size of the room and the other equipments for hooking up home theater system.

If you have a bigger room however, the basic three home theater speakers may not be enough. You may need  to put up to six speakers around the room, you may also consider complimenting your home theater  speakers with subwoofer to complete the surround sound like in movie theaters. In addition to the  speakers, you may also need to purchase a high-end television set which should not be smaller than 27  inches. It may not be reasonable if you buy a smaller television set because it may drown in the  fineness of your home theater speakers.

Additionally, the blu ray home theater system needs to have a high quality, progressive scan DVD Player  that may help provide sharp images and flicker-free pictures for your home theater system. The home  theater speakers, television and DVD player are the basic components of a home theater system especially  if the room is quite small.

However, for bigger room, adding home theater furniture and home theater projectors may be necessary to complete the package. The DVD player and the  television set may answer for the requirement of sight in a movie theater setup. Your home theater  speaker needs to answer for the sound requirement, and if your home theater speaker is not of high  quality brand, it may not be able to do the job for you.

In order for you to avoid making mistakes in your choice of home theater equipments including home  theater speakers, and home theater furniture, you may require the services of a home theater designer.  They will be able to provide the best recommendation that will ensure you will get the most out of your home theater system including top notch home theater speakers.

Additional home theater furniture may be  necessary to complete the package and to dress up the whole room.
